Feast of St. Laurence of Rome (August 10)   1 comment

Above: Lawrence Before Valerianus (1447-1450), by Fra Angelico

Deacon, and Martyr at Rome, died in 258

During an imperial persecution the government confiscated church properties.  Deacon Laurence distributed church funds to the poor in this context.  When authorities demanded to know the location of church treasures, Laurence pointed to the poor and said, “These are the treasures of the Church.”  The Roman government roasted him alive on a gridiron, according to tradition.

Almighty God, you called your deacon Laurence to serve you with deeds of love, and gave him the crown of martyrdom; Grant that we, following his example, may fulfill your commandments by defending and supporting the poor, and by loving you with all our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
