SAINT ANTHONY PIEROZZI (A.K.A. SAINT ANTONINUS OF FLORENCE) (1389-1459)

Roman Catholic Archbishop of Florence

Born in Florence, on the Italian peninsula, St. Anthony Pierozzi/Antoninus of Florence joined the Dominicans when he was sixteen years old.  He studied at Fiesole then at Cortona.  At Cortona Fra Angelica (https://neatnik2009.wordpress.com/2010/10/25/feast-of-st-guido-di-pietro-a-k-a-fra-angelico-february-18/) was a classmate.  And there St. Anthony/Antoninus earned a reputation as an excellent student.  Then he progressed int he order, serving as a superior and a prior at various Italian cities then as provincial of the Roman province.  He founded San Marco convent, Florence, in 1436.  The abbey became one of the more noted convents on the peninsula.

Already a noted theologian, the saint became Archbishop of Florence in 1446.  He abolished gambling in his see, helped the poor, and proved crucial in aiding people in the aftermath of a plague in 1448 and an earthquake five years later.  At Anthony/Antoninus was also renowned across Europe as an expert in canon law.  And he wrote theological treatises.  In one the saint argued that the state had an obligation to work for the common good and to help the poor.

Let us be honest:  Often the state, which ever one a person has in mind, works for the interests of the wealthy.  The state might give lip service to the common good and the needs of the poor.  The state might even throw the poor a few bones now and again.  But priorities reside with the wealthy.  This is sinful.  The prophets of the Bible said so.  Jesus said so.  And St. Anthony Pierozzi/Antoninus of Florence said so.

Holy and Righteous God, you created us in your image.

Grant us grace to contend fearlessly against evil and to make no peace with oppression.

Help us, like your servant Saint Anthony Pierozzi/Antoninus of Florence,

to work for justice among people and nations to the glory of your name,

through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.  Amen.
