WILLIAM HAMMOND (JANUARY 6, 1719-AUGUST 19, 1783)

English Moravian Hymn Writer

Sometimes, when I add someone to the Ecumenical Calendar of Saints’ Days and Holy Days, I have access to a great amount of information about him or her.  On other occasions, such as this one, I have very little information.  Yet what I have suffices.

William Hammond (1719-1783), born at Battle, Sussex, England, attended St. John’s College, Cambridge.  In 1743 he converted to Calvinistic Methodism.  Two years later, however, he became a Moravian.  Hammond, the author of many hymns and the translator of a host of hymns from Greek and Latin, wrote his autobiography in Greek.  If anyone has translated it into English, I have found no mention of that fact.  The author of the 1745 collection Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs died at London in 1783.

I have added one of Hammond’s texts, “Lord, We Come Before Thee Now,” to my GATHERED PRAYERS weblog.

My research yielded another result.  I learned that inclusion of Hammond’s hymns in hymnals has dropped off precipitously since the 1800s.  Much of what has replaced such excellent texts is dross, unfortunately.

Dear God of beauty,

you have granted literary ability and spiritual sensitivity to

William Hammond and others, who have composed hymn texts.

May we, as you guide us,

find worthy hymn texts to be icons,

through which we see you.

In the Name of God:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Amen.
