SOMERSET CORRY LOWRY (MARCH 24, 1855-JANUARY 29, 1932)

Anglican Priest and Hymn Writer

Somerset Corry Lowry was an Anglican priest, a devotional and theological writer, and the author of about 60 hymns.  He, born in Dublin, Ireland, on March 24, 1855, had an attorney for a father.  Lowry, educated at Cambridge (B.A., 1877; M.A., 1880), joined the ranks of Anglican deacons in 1879 and priests the following year.  Lowry, Curate of Doncaster then of Yorkshire, became the Vicar of North Holmwood before serving as the Vicar of St. Augustine’s, Bournemouth (1900-1911).  Then he was the Vicar of Wonstan (1911-1914) and St. Bartholomew’s, Southsea (1914-1919).  Our saint retired to Bournemouth.  His books included the following:

  1. The Work of the Holy Spirit (1894),
  2. Convalescence (1897),
  3. Lessons from the Passion (1899),
  4. The Days of Our Pilgrimage (1900), and
  5. Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1910).

Lowry’s most popular hymn became “Son of God, Eternal Saviour.”

Lowry, aged 76 years, died in Torquay, Engand, on January 29, 1932.
