GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Vesta Larkadia and Strasser

A Screen Capture

  1. In 2019, Dawn Stern and husband Stephan Wolfert operate DE-CRUIT, a non-profit organization that treats military veterans’ trauma with science and the plays of William Shakespeare.
  2. The choice of Vesta and Janus for Callie’s parents, spoken of since the first episode of the season, is not accidental.  In Greco-Roman mythology, the two deities are associated with each other.  Vesta is the goddess of the family hearth.  Janus, the god of past, present, and future, is supposedly responsible for doorways, gates, and all beginnings.
  3. Travis and Callie work together at Clarke Station to capture Strasser, a smuggler.  Strasser recognizes Callie, though, and shoots her, injuring her severely.  The temporary solution to the problem of saving Callie’s life is to place her in an old and leaky cryonic tube aboard the Transutopian.  The real solution is to get to Mars as soon as possible and get “spare parts” from Callie’s blank, or mindless clone.
  4. In 2300, a member of a wealthy family has a blank, which has no brain above the brain stem.
  5. Before the Tulip can get to Mars, it has fight off Strasser’s ship while docked at Clarke Station and denied official permission to depart.  The Tulip leaves anyway, damaging Clarke Station.
  6. The Transutopian docks at Mars Orbital One and takes a shuttle to the Larkadia estate at Olympus Mons City.  Janus lies when he says Callie has no blank.
  7. Vesta, Callie’s mother, has not spoken to her daughter in two years, since Callie became a bounty hunter.
  8. The Larkadia family, assumed to be wealthy, has fallen on hard times.  Janus has pawned his blank and that of Vesta and Callie to one Nivinksy, who insists on “foreclosing,” or selling off body parts for money, of Callie’s blank.  Janus, desperate to save his daughter’s life, accepts Nivinsky’s offer and prepares to send himself to the chop shop, so Nivinsky will release Callie’s blank.
  9. Strasser visits Vesta and threatens Janus and Callie.
  10. Marcus has experience building small reactors.
  11. Strasser sees Travis on Mars and shoots at him, but Travis avoids getting shot.  Martian police arrest Travis, though, and Strasser gets away.  Janus persuades a detective to let Travis see police records.  Travis learns that Strasser is really Devak, a member of Citadel Squad, which Callie exposed for corruption.  Devak is officially dead.  Travis places a tracking device of Janus.
  12. Fake customs inspectors attempt to board the Tulip.  Percy vents atmosphere–compressed carbon dioxide–at them.  They leave.
  13. Travis rescues Janus at Nivinsky’s place of business.  Travis and Rudolpho arrest Strasser.  Travis threatens Nivinsky, forcing him to hand over Callie’s blank.
  14. Callie receives the necessary parts from her blank and recovers.
  15. Janus is proud of his daughter, whom he loves.  She rebuffs him, though.  She does not know how much he was willing to risk to save her.  She also does not know the truth about her family’s finances.
  16. Callie is better medically, but is not whole.

Length of original episode = 0:47:57

Length of Redux episode = 0:43:59

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Lumpy Goodwin

A Screen Capture

  1. The universe of Starhunter/Starhunter Redux is dangerous and dark.
  2. Walker Boone, who played Senator Orford, also portrayed Leland T. Lynch, one of the Chief Engineers of the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-D, during the first season of Star Trek:  The Next Generation, in Skin of Evil.
  3. In Syn City, Io, Jupiter Federation, Marcus and Callie are complaining about having to wait for Travis when they rescue a young woman wearing only a sheet from two men wearing blood-stained white uniforms.  The young woman is Taryn Orford, the disowned daughter of Mars Federation Senator Orford.  She is also a drug addict.  She and Marcus were friends and drug addicts on the streets together until Marcus went off with Travis.
  4. This episode seems to imply that Taryn and Marcus were on the streets of Syn City, Io.  However, this series has already established that Travis rescued Marcus in a bar on Oberon, a moon of Uranus.  I wonder if I am missing some important details.
  5. Marcus feels guilty for abandoning Taryn.
  6. Marcus and Callie take Taryn back to the Transutopian, docked at Clarke Station, for “Father” would find her at a hospital in Syn City.  “Father” is Father Abode, of whom no image exists.
  7. Half of Taryn’s body is turning into something not human.  The rapid transformation is killing her.  Percy takes on the unpleasant duty of draining blood from flooded areas of Taryn’s body, concealed under an increasingly stained sheet as the episode progresses.
  8. Senator Orford, who does not care about his daughter, blames Marcus for getting her addicted to drugs.  Senator Orford also insists on keeping Marcus and Taryn apart, even after hiring Travis and the team (minus Marcus) to bring in the notorious Father Abode, a student of Dr. Novak during the Callistian Civil War (The Man Who Sold the World).
  9. Father Abode genetically modifies victims for “sex and degradation.”  Options in genetic modification include transgender and transspecies.
  10. Marcus, working the case alone in Syn City, reunites with Vaela Tambur, a friend an an exotic dancer with a heart of gold.  She is reluctant to help him find Lumpy Goodwin, a drug dealer and a human trafficker in cahoots with Father Abode.
  11. Senator Orford introduces Travis and Callie to detectives Gus and Arnot, who are corrupt–in cahoots with Lumpy and Father Abode.
  12. Marcus reunites with Lumpy, who, after learning that Marcus is on the right side of the law, drugs him and plans to give him to Father Abode.  Then Travis and Callie rescue Marcus and arrest Lumpy.
  13. Gus and Arnot, concerned about having to tell Father Abode about Lumpy’s capture, know they will not want to live unless they can spin the situation to their benefit.  They plot to capture bounty hunters, offer to trade them for Lumpy, get Lumpy back, then kill the bounty hunters.
  14. The Transutopian has at least two functional shuttles.
  15. Travis has a plan.  He will go undercover as Mr. Farrell, carrying a skin sample from Callie, and go to meet Father Abode.  Travis needs access to Father Abode’s records of genetic modification, to save Taryn.  Callie inserts a top-secret tracking device in one of Travis’s arms.  This tracking device is top-secret and from Mars Federation Special Forces.
  16. Father Abode is a woman.  What a way to avoid detection!
  17. According to plan, Callie and Rudolpho follow Travis.  Father Abode learns why Travis is there, and begins to modify him genetically.  Gus and Arnot arrest Callie and Rudolpho.  Rudolpho offers to bribe them, so they let the bounty hunters go.  Callie and Rudolpho rescue Travis and encounter Father Abode and an amorous clone of Callie.  The close is fragile, though; she dies due to the slightest injury.
  18. Taryn and Travis recover aboard the Transutopian.
  19. The woman in the brig of the Tulip is actually a clone of Father Abode.  The clone dies.  The real Father Abode is on one of the outer worlds.
  20. Taryn agrees to meet her father.
  21. Gus and Arnot keep very low profiles.  They also never receive the bribes Rudolpho promised them.
  22. In this episode Callie said that if she were in Taryn’s position, her father would not help her.

We will learn about Callie’s parents in the next episode, Chasing Janus.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Cira

A Screen Capture

  1. Get used to seeing Syn City, Io, in the Jupiter Federation.
  2. The episode opens with a weapons deal that ends in a shoot out.  The only survivors are Dakkota 79, leader of the (Raider) Dakkota clan, and his girlfriend, Cira.  Dakkota 79 purchases Thorium 238.
  3. Rudolpho DeLuna is behaving suspiciously.  He is covertly contacting Lou Tove, a merchant of a sort who deals in former Raiders.
  4. Rhendal Ving, of the Jupiter Federation, hires Travis and Callie to prevent a Raider clan war as the Dakkota clan (from Triton) moves into the Jupiter Federation.  Why bounty hunters instead of federal agents?  Bureaucracy.  Hiring contractors is simpler and involves less bureaucracy.  In this case, Ving plans to detain Dakkota 79 on delinquent docking charges.
  5. No jurisdiction has paid in the Jimmi Zavras matter from the previous episode.
  6. Ving resents Callie for, while in Mars Federation Special Forces, having exposed the Citadel Squad for planting evidence and getting them drummed out of the military.
  7. Travis is the new captain of the Transutopian.
  8. Dakkota 79 is not above killing Dakkota clan members he knows to be loyal just to send the message that clan members should be loyal.
  9. Callie, who became a bounty hunter after leaving the military, does not get along with her family, despite her privileged upbringing.
  10. Travis claims to be the son of Dante.  Yet he has not memory of Dante or Penny, as the actual Travis did at the end of the first season.  As I wrote in the previous post, this Travis is not the son of Dante and Penny.
  11. Only five members of the Varran clan have left.  This Travis is one of them.
  12. Percy trusts nobody.
  13. Travis and Callie go undercover as weapons technicians.  Cira recognizes Travis, her former lover.  He knows her from a time when she belonged to a different clan.
  14. Percy confronts Rudolpho regarding his covert transmissions.  He denies that they place the ship or anyone aboard in danger.  Percy threatens to throw him out an airlock if he is lying.
  15. Marcus discovers the contents of Rudolpho’s covert transmissions.
  16. Lou Tove arrives on the Tulip with bounty hunter Redus Fledder-John, who endangers the lives of the crew, minus Travis and Callie.  Marcus arrests Tove.
  17. Dakkota 79, suspicious of Travis and Callie, learns that they are bounty hunters, and so is Cira.  Travis and Callie rescue Cira, arrest Dakkota 79, and return to the Tulip.  Travis leaves Cira and Dakkota 79 aboard the shuttle, but prevents her from leaving with his bounty, worth 200,000 credits.
  18. Travis, etc., confront Fledder-John, who has taken Percy hostage.  Percy defends herself well.  Rudolpho kills Fledder-John.
  19. We see the new lookout set.
  20. Travis and Cira part.
  21. Rudolpho was seeking out and neutralizing people who knew who Travis is.
  22. Does Travis know who he is?

THE SECOND SEASON

Above:  An Example of Retconning the Tulip Interior

A Screen Capture

(Look at the windows and the steps.)

The opening titles sequence to Starhunter 2300 (2003-2004) is here.

I prefer the opening and closing credits music in both seasons of Starhunter Redux; Donald Quan’s music has a positive effect on me.

I realize that a refit of a Transutopian happened off-screen in Rebirth and that Percy had the bridge chairs replaced off-camera early in the episode, but the only explanation for certain changes to the interior of the ship within the Redux universe is retconning.  In our universe, of course, the answer is that people built new sets.

The re-editing of the first season in Starhunter Redux removes most of the visual discontinuity from the first season to the second.  Nevertheless, the color palate in the first season is darker than in the second season.

As early as 2010 and 2011, when I wrote the first set of posts about this series, I posited that each season played out in a separate reality.

Starhunter Redux plays out in one reality, though.

I like seeing Murray Melvin back as the slightly redesigned Caravaggio in the second season of Starhunter Redux, no offense to Graham Harley.

Characters keep referring to the passage of fifteen years since the events of the previous season.  In-universe, the first season ended in late 2286.  The last firm date, from Eat Sin, was September 13, 2286.  Given the date of January 3, 2300, in Rebirth, the passage of time was actually about thirteen years.

THERE ARE TWO TRAVIS MONTANAS

Above:  Clive Robertson as Travis Montana (Left) with Paul Fox as Marcus Fagen (Right)

A Screen Capture

Discontinuities between the Travis Montana we meet in Travis and Resurrection and the Travis Montana we meet in the second season provided evidence I interpreted as support for the parallel universes theory in 2010 and 2011.

Travis Montana (Mark I) was about fifteen years old in late 2286, when Dante Montana, his father, caught up with him.  This Travis was the first naturally-occurring manifestation of the Divinity Cluster.  Zephyrn, as the Raiders called him, was “the Chosen One” and the leader of the Raiders  He had perfect memory, possessed a psychic link to his father, remembered this mother, and knew all about the Divinity Cluster.  This Travis disappeared with his father into hyperspace aboard a shuttle about to collide with the surface of Earth in late 2286.

Travis Montana (Mark II) was in his middle-to-late thirties in 2300.  He had been the leader of the Varran clan of the Raiders until 2289/2290 (about a decade prior to January 3, 2300), when he left both, due to an attack of conscience during the abduction of the boy designated to become his heir and the next leader of the Varran clan.  This Travis was manifesting the Divinity Cluster; he traveled in time on occasion (as in Rebirth), but knew nothing about the Divinity Cluster until Percy briefed him at the end of the episode.  This Travis also had no memories of Dante or Penny.  Yet he referred to Dante as his father and to Percy as his cousin.  This Travis bore the Raider name “Dazak.”

The following information comes from series co-creator G. Philip Jackson, via email.  The Travis Montana we see in the second season is not the son of Dante and Penny Montana.  We will catch up with the real Travis Montana in the third season.  I have another reason to anticipate the third season.

Perhaps the man claiming to be Travis Montana believes he is the son of Dante Montana.  If so, he does not know who he is, and a line of dialogue to Jimmi Zavras at the tail end of Rebirth is ironic.

For the sake of convenience, I will refer to Travis Montana (Mark II) as “Travis” or “Travis Montana,” minus the quotation marks, in posts, starting after this sentence.

A PROPOSED CHRONOLOGY LINKING THE FIRST TWO SEASONS

Above:  Establishing the Date in Rebirth

A Screen Capture

2271:  Penny Montana gave birth to Travis Montana on Titan.

November 3, 2274:  Senaca led the raid that resulted in the death of Penny Montana and of Percy Montana’s parents, as well as the abduction of the three-year-old Travis.

Early 2275:  Dante became a bounty hunter, with Percy (probably seven years old) in tow.

Late 2285:  The beginning of the first season.  Percy was eighteen years old.  Dante was thirty-five years old.

2286:  The events of the majority of the first season.  (G. Philip Jackson tells me that the events of the first season took about a year in story time.)

Late 2286:  The end of the second season.  Travis, Dante, Percy, and Eccleston disappeared into hyperspace.

2289/2290:  Dazak, leader of the Varran clan, left that clan and the Raiders.  Jimmi Zavras attacked Dazak, abducted a boy who was supposed to become Dazak’s heir and the next leader of the Varran clan, and ordered the deaths of the boy’s parents.  Dazak recovered and called himself Travis Montana afterward.  (How long had he thought of himself as Travis Montana?)

Year Uncertain:  Travis (formerly Dazak) saved the life of Raider apprentice Marcus Fagen in a Raider knife fight “in a hellhole bar on Oberon.”  Marcus began to pursue an honest life in the company of Travis.

January 3, 2300:  The Transutopian, with only Percy Montana aboard, emerged from hyperspace.  Her time in hyperspace was, in her words, “like a dream.”  Caravaggio’s appearance changed slightly.  (I refer to the Murray Melvin version of Caravaggio, in both seasons of Starhunter Redux.)  The Tulip, according to Jupiter Federation salvage laws, became her property.

January 4, 2300:  The Transutopian docked at Clarke Station, near Jupiter.  Percy met Travis, the former Dazak, and did not accept him as her cousin.  (She had met the real Travis at the end of the first season, after all.)  Percy has aged to appear twenty-two years old, although she was chronologically closer to thirty-two years old.  A minor refit of the ship began.  Refitters removed the sensor array and did not replace it.  Percy had the bridge chairs replaced.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Dawn Stern as Callista “Callie” Larkadia

A Screen Capture

  1. The Redux version of this episode rearranges some of the content from early in the original Starhunter 2300 episode.
  2. The misinformation about the detrimental effects of MSG in Chinese food persists into the late twenty-third century.  (The twenty-fourth century will begin in 2301.)  Misinformation from 1969 does take root, does it not?
  3. When we meet Travis and Marcus, they are in Syn City, Io, a moon of Jupiter.  They and Callista “Callie” Larkadia are pursuing the same criminal, Aliana Niran, a black-market dealer.  After Travis and Marcus arrest Niran at Clarke Station the next day, the “tapped out” Callie is angry.
  4. The Internet Movie Database (IMDB), not always reliable, lists Niran’s name as “Ailana Niran.”  Yet Travis pronounces her first name as “Aliana.”
  5. Jimmi Zavras, presumably the leader of the Varran clan since Dazak left about a decade prior, wants to kill Travis.
  6. Marcus is surprised to learn that Travis travels in time, after knowing him for years.
  7. Rudolpho, desperate for money, offers to lease the Tulip from Percy.  Callie, desperate for money, goes to work for Rudolpho.
  8. Marcus works for Travis.
  9. Rudolpho said in the original version of The Most Wanted Man that the more he earned, the more he spent and the deeper he went into debt.  His financial condition in this episode is consistent with that statement.
  10. Rudolpho was rich at the end of Resurrection, set in late 2286.
  11. Percy, as the new owner of the Tulip, takes half the bounty.  She needs the quatloos, to cite a currency from Star Trek (1966-1969).  (I know; the currency in the universe of Starhunter is credits.)
  12. Callie, one of “the Larkadias,” had a privileged youth, which she did not enjoy.  She is also a veteran of Mars Federation Special Forces.
  13. Lucretia Scott was also a veteran of Special Forces.
  14. Jimmi Zavras kills 312 people at the Pandora Terraform Research Facility, near Saturn, to lure Travis.
  15. Jimmi’s ship is the Guardian.
  16. Percy, Rudolpho, Callie, Travis, and Marcus agree to a trial run.  They will apprehend those responsible for the attack at Pandora, divide the bounty, and decide what to do next.
  17. Percy does not make plans, for they do not work out for her.
  18. As the crew members get to know each other (somewhat), they work well together to complete the mission.
  19. We see new sets for the first time.  The infirmary is one of these.
  20. “Percy does not always make sense to the impartial observer, but somehow she manages to make sense to herself.”–Caravaggio on Percy
  21. “I work in mysterious ways.”–Percy on herself
  22. Travis and Callie take the shuttle to Pandora, to search for evidence.  They do this without Percy’s permission.
  23. Percy insists that she is in command.  She traps Marcus, redirects ship controls away from the bridge (where Rudolpho is), and plans to leave Travis and Callie behind.  Percy says, “no pretend cousin, big fat sleeze, little buddy, or mystery slut.”  At this time Jimmi, in the Guardian, attacks the Tulip.  Percy fires lasers while the particle beam warms up.  Travis and Callie approach from Pandora and fire strictly illegal torpedoes at the Guardian‘s reactor.  Jimmi withdraws, rather than explode.
  24. A shuttle cannot legally carry torpedoes.
  25. Percy has made enemies aboard the Tulip.  Travis makes peace with her.
  26. Skinny, Jimmi’s first officer, contacts Travis and arranges a rendezvous at a bar on Iapetus Docking Station, near Saturn.  All on the Tulip recognize this as a trap.  Travis goes to the bar, a fairly tame gentleman’s club (the dancers wear bikinis and short shorts), but he is not alone.  Marcus and Callie are undercover as lovers.  Travis, Marcus, and Callie reverse the trap and spring it on Jimmi and Skinny.  Skinny, Travis reveals, was supposed to be the leader of the Varran clan, not Jimmi’s slave.
  27. Jimmi and Skinny become prisoners on the Tulip.  But no government will pay the bounty yet, due to jurisdictional disputes.

Next:  Star Crossed.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Navarre

A Screen Capture

  1. We have arrived at the conclusion of the first season.
  2. In Rudolpho’s opening transmission in Travis, he opines regarding surprises.  Rudolpho concludes, “I was the best think is someone’s life.  Poor bastard.  Now that’s a surprise.”  The Redux version of Travis does not include this transmission.
  3. This episode opens about a day after the end of Bad Seed.  Percy has been at Raider headquarters for at least seventeen hours.
  4. Percy’s transmission to Dante leads him to find the atmospheric seeds in his quarters.
  5. Travis (fourteen or fifteen years old) is the leader of the Raiders.  He is also the first naturally-occurring manifestation of Divinity Cluster.  He can render someone unconscious without using force, see time, remember every detail of his life, and travel in dimensional space.  This is a partial list of his abilities and powers.  He has difficulty remaining sane.
  6. Zephryn/Travis has a psychic link to Dante.  He has always known where Dante was and what the father was doing.
  7. Travis’s Raider name is Zephryn.
  8. David Fournier, who portrays Zephryn/Travis, was seventeen years old.
  9. Denis Theriault, who portrayed not-Travis in Family Values, was fourteen years old.
  10. Senaca, Zephryn’s Raider father (and the man who coordinated the raid on Titan on November 3, 2274), is responsible for the abduction of Travis Montana, the death of Penny Montana, and the demise of Percy Montana’s parents.
  11. Senaca regards Zephryn as a source of political power and a pawn to manipulate.  Senaca also fears Zephryn.
  12. Dante’s intensity in seeking Travis and Percy is understandable.
  13. Salomea is Zephryn’s loyal bodyguard.  She clashes with Senaca.
  14. Percy, who initially demands that Zephryn/Dante take a DNA test to confirm his identity, drops that demand shortly thereafter, even though Zephryn/Travis agrees to take the DNA test.
  15. Senaca is a wily man who plays the role of diplomat well while plotting to betray people.
  16. Dante agrees to trade the atmospheric seeds for Travis and Percy.  Senaca pretends to agree to these terms.
  17. Dante hands the atmospheric seeds over to the Raiders.
  18. Luc is loyal to Dante.
  19. Luc requests all Orchard files on Gunnar (spelling?) Biochemical, which created the atmospheric seeds.  Navarre informs her that Tosca’s forces are en route, and that Dante is in great danger.
  20. Zephryn/Travis Montana is stuck between Senaca and the Orchard, mainly Tosca. Senaca and Tosca are dealing with each other.  Senaca distrusts Tosca, though.
  21. Dante reunites with Percy and Travis at Raider headquarters while Luc is on the way to rescue them.
  22. Senaca order’s Luc’s death, but Zephryn/Travis sends Salomea to save Luc’s life.
  23. The Earth is barely habitable.  Do the Raiders plan to use the atmospheric seeds to restore the home world’s atmosphere then settle on Earth?
  24. Penny, who worked for the Orchard, experimented on herself.  After she became pregnant with Travis, the influence of the Divinity Cluster spread to him.
  25. Zephryn/Travis had Penny’s files stolen from the Orchard.
  26. Zephyrn/Travis and Dante converse with Penny’s soul, which Travis has brought from the dimension she inhabits.  Penny apologizes for what she did to her son.  Zephyrn/Travis forgives his mother and sends her to the fourth dimension, where she will find peace.
  27. Salomea saves the lives of Luc, Percy, and Dante from Senaca.
  28. Senaca kills Salomea.
  29. Luc and the three Montanas escape in a shuttle and go the the Transutopian.
  30. In Rudolpho’s opening transmission in Resurrection, he knows that Dante has found Travis.  Rudolpho also reports that he has heard whispers of “other things waiting for their chance.”  This transmission is absent from the Redux version of the episode.
  31. In a bar on Mars, one Hippolito (portrayed by director Patrick Malakian) asks the audience if someone wants to sing.  Hippolito recognizes Eccleston, who looks much worse for wear and who performs a harrowing version of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”  Hippolito alerts Navarre immediately.  In the original version of Resurrection and in the teaser for Resurrection (Redux) at the end of Travis (Redux), Eccleston then kills Hippolito.  In Resurrection (Redux), however, the death of Hippolito is absent.
  32. Tosca intercepts Hippolito’s message to Navarre.
  33. A Raider squadron pursues the Transutopian, which is taking severe damage.  The ship has no more torpedoes left and the reactors are not functioning well.  Then the Raider squadron leaves.  The Orchard will extract “the Chosen One,” or Travis.
  34. Travis explains that the Raiders are running toward Earth.  All of the sudden, he reveals that the atmospheric seeds will not restore Earth’s atmosphere, but destroy all life on the planet.
  35. Interpersonal relations aboard the Tulip become more difficult.  Travis is not warm and friendly.  Percy knows she must leave the ship soon.  She rebuffs Luc, who tries to be comforting.  Luc and Dante still have an understanding, though.
  36. Travis agrees with Percy when she says she has been on the Tulip too long.
  37. Luc joins the Orchard resistance to Tosca.  Dante understands and permits her to leave.  He even sees her off.
  38. Percy cannot repair the engines and reactors.  While looking for a part to repair the communications system, she sees Eccleston flicker in front of her.  Later, he materializes in front of her.
  39. Eccleston has been traveling in dimensions with no smell, taste, or touch, with “just a terrible beauty.”
  40. Raider shuttles use a deception matrix to mask their approach to Earth.
  41. What could be worse than rendering Earth uninhabitable?  Eccleston explains that a terrible thing is going to happen in all people.  He explains to Travis and Dante that the Divinity Cluster is not about freedom, as he had said in The Divinity Cluster, but is about the extinction of the human species instead.  Eccleston has seen those aliens who have been waiting for millions of years for their chance at resurrection in people.
  42. Travis, who recognizes Eccleston as “the First One,” is initially skeptical.  Then Eccleston touches Travis’s head.  Dante touches Eccleston and Travis.  A glowing effect later, Eccleston has shared with them what he has seen; they have seen it and know that he is being honest.
  43. On Mars, Navarre explains to Luc that the resistance has not fully recovered from the death of Darius in Dark and Stormy Night.  Tosca and armed guards interrupt.  Tosca has Navarre killed.
  44. How often should we in the viewing audience take Tosca at her word?  Sometimes she speaks accurately, as when she explains that Darius created the plan to extract Travis.  We know this from Dark and Stormy Night.  Should we believe her when she denies any responsibility for the death of Darius and insists she does not know who is responsible  Why did she terminate the Orchard investigation into Darius’s death?
  45. Tosca is one of the Orchard personnel who welcome the resurrection of ancient aliens in human beings.
  46. The editing of the Redux version of Resurrection makes more sense that the editing of the original version of Resurrection regarding one sequence of scenes.  In the original version of the episode, an Orchard shuttle approaches the Tulip at Mars when Eccleston transports the Transutopian to the outer threshold of Luna.  Then Tosca orders Senaca to oversee the extraction of Travis but tells him not to destroy the Tulip.  In a subsequent scene, Tosca orders Orchard operatives based on the Moon to extract Travis.  In the Redux version of Resurrection, Tosca never orders Senaca to extract Travis, just to avoid destroying the Tulip.
  47. Senaca orders the destruction of the Tulip anyway, after having disabled it.
  48. Dante and Travis leave the Tulip in a shuttle.  Travis must see the seeds then see them somewhere else, such as the Sun, to save life on Earth.
  49. Travis cannot do this.  The Raiders seed Earth’s atmosphere.
  50. After Senaca orders the shooting down of the shuttle containing Dante and Travis, the shuttle falls to the surface of the dying planet.
  51. Percy elects to remain aboard the Tulip, to restore Caravaggio.  The only other person on board is Eccleston, who takes the ship into hyperspace immediately prior to Raider torpedoes striking it.
  52. Tosca throws tantrums when she experiences frustration.
  53. When we last see Luc, Tosca is pointing a gun at her and cocking the trigger.
  54. Before the shuttle crashes into a city, Dante and Travis hold hands.  Dante tells Travis to see home.
  55. Dante awakes at home, on Titan, on November 3, 2274.  Travis is three years old and Penny is alive.  Then the Raiders attack.
  56. Throughout the episode, Dante avoids a message from Rudolpho.  After the Tulip enters hyperspace, Caravaggio (rebooted) plays that transmission.  Rudolpho, having won a lawsuit, leaves the bounty hunting business and gives the Tulip to Dante.

Next:  Rebirth, the first episode of the second season.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Navarre

A Screen Capture

  1. In Rudolpho’s opening transmission (omitted in the Redux version), he says that women have no power to change him.  Rudolpho also states that secrets cause damage and that parents screw up their children.
  2. This episode plays out over four days, according to the passage of time, indicated in dialogue.
  3. In the Jovian system….
  4. Navarre, a senior official of the Orchard, finds himself marginalized by the faction to which Tosca belongs.  He also finds himself at a crossroads, with no escape.
  5. Dante dreams that he, roaming the Transutopian, wakes himself up.
  6. Orchard agents, commanded by Tosca, board the Tulip and abduct Dante.  One agent reprograms Caravaggio.  The altered AI is blue, not yellow.  The blue Caravaggio floods the quarters of Luc and Percy with a narcotic nerve agent, rendering them unconscious.
  7. Three days later (although one would not know that, except via dialogue), on space station Epsilon 147, departs for the Transutopian in a shuttle.  Meanwhile, Tosca interrogates Dante on Epsilon 147.
  8. Tosca and her agents have injectors (or an injector) identical to the one Eccleston had in The Divinity Cluster and that Darius presumed was lost in Dark and Stormy Night.
  9. Tosca, seeking to locate Travis, injects Dante with a serum, a variation of the Divinity Cluster, in hope of establishing a psychic link between Dante and Travis.  Eccleston developed the serum.  Dante, in an induced trance state, sees Penny instead.
  10. Navarre’s access code is “Cassandra’s warning heeded.”  How ironic!
  11. Yellow Caravaggio and Blue Caravaggio argue.  Blue Caravaggio wins, for a while.
  12. Navarre, approaching the Transutopian, orders Yellow Caravaggio to replace the atmosphere in the quarters of Luc and Percy, who wake up.  Blue Caravaggio initiates the ship’s self-destruct sequence and insults Percy.
  13. I enjoy the way Percy says, “I’m a vindictive little person.”
  14. Percy forces her quarters’ doors open. Then she meets Navarre and Luc, en route to a shuttle.  Percy remains on board to reprogram Caravaggio and halt the self-destruct sequence.
  15. Navarre and Luc go to Epsilon 147 to rescue Dante, which they do.
  16. Dante, under the influence of the serum, remembers seeing Penny inject herself (via a device that resembles the one Eccleston had) with what she claimed was a “vitamin booster.”
  17. Darius harbored suspicions about Navarre until shortly before Darius died.
  18. Tosca cancelled the Orchard investigation into Darius’s death.
  19. Percy finds the container of atmospheric seeds in the kaleidoscope from Goodbye, So Long.
  20. A Raider shuttle with Salomea on board approaches the Transutopian.  She is on a mission from Travis, to find Dante’s VR device, which Penny invented.
  21. Travis remembers Percy and knows that Dante has been searching for him.
  22. Travis should be fourteen or fifteen years old.
  23. Navarre injects Dante with an antidote.  Then Luc takes Dante back to the Tulip.
  24. Percy finally succeeds in rebooting Caravaggio and saving the ship.
  25. Percy leaves the container of atmospheric seeds in Dante’s quarters then leaves with Salomea.
  26. Dante and Luc, aboard the Transutopian, follows the ion trail of the Raider shuttle with Salomea and Percy on board.
  27. The new special effects are very good.

Next:  Travis and Resurrection, with Travis Montana.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Stephen Hamilton

A Screen Capture

  1. The new special effects are beautiful.
  2. Umbriel is a moon of Uranus.
  3. Yet the Umbriel colony (Stephen Hamilton’s point of origin) is the site of the oldest colony on a natural satellite of Jupiter.  Which moon would that be?  One wonders.
  4. Actresses Anna and Cathy Keenan, who play sisters Ayla and Cordula, are sisters.
  5. I assume that Hamilton’s wife, who has presumably left him, has dark hair, given that Ayla is a blonde, Cordula is a brunette, and Stephen has fair hair.
  6. In Rudolpho’s opening transmission (omitted in the Redux version), he says that adolescent females are exhausting.  Rudolpho also states that little choices determine one’s fate.  The second statement certainly applies to Stephen Hamilton.
  7. Percy installs Percy’s Internal Defense System (PIDS) in the shuttle bay without Dante’s permission.   Contrary to Dante’s orders, she does not agree to dismantle PIDS until the end of the episode.  Percy has a rebellious episode throughout most of this episode.
  8. Dante picks up the Hamiltons at the Moon and takes them to Mars.  Rudolpho orders Dante to provide transportation for the family.  Stephen Hamilton is a “contact of a contact.”  In plain language, he works for Gunnar (spelling?) Biochemical, which has connections to the Orchard.
  9. Gunnar (spelling?) Biochemical is developing a new technology of terraforming–seeds that alter the atmosphere of a planet.  That is the information we receive in this episode, at least.  Hint:  Subsequent episodes contain more information about the seeds.
  10. These are the seeds from Goodbye, So Long.
  11. Percy refers to events of Family Values.
  12. Stephen Hamilton is in deep debt and trouble.  He accepted the Orchard’s money then failed to deliver the agreed-upon result.  He seeks protection for his daughters and himself from certain dangerous people.  The Orchard is dangerous, too, of course.
  13. Percy still hates Luc.
  14. Rudolpho expresses his condolences for the death of Darius Scott at the end of Dark and Stormy Night.
  15. Stephen Hamilton, by his admission, is a terrible spy.  He gets nowhere quickly with Luc when he asks her about her family.  His mission is to learn secrets she may have shared with Darius.  Stephen learns no secrets.
  16. Stephen Hamilton is also a terrible liar.  He tells the Orchard that he has data files on the atmospheric seeds when he does not have those files.
  17. Cordula is an especially negative influence on Percy.  Cordula gives Percy a dose of a drug called charge.  Cordula and Percy get high together.
  18. Percy briefly wears a dress.
  19. Rudolpho informs Dante that an authority marshal will intercept the Transutopian to take Stephen Hamilton away.  An orchard agent, identifying himself as an authority marshal, arrives without so much as a warrant.
  20. The Orchard (part of it, to be precise) changes its plans during this episode.  Initially, the Orchard wanted to question Luc.  Enemies of the late Darius have become foes of Luc, who has no interest in speaking with her father’s murderers.  Anyone connected with Darius has come under suspicion.  Before the end of the episode, the anti-Darius faction tries to kill everyone aboard the Tulip.
  21. The fake authority marshal abducts Percy, who is high.  He mistakes her for one of the Hamilton daughters.
  22. Dante kills the fake authority marshal.
  23. PIDS kills the armed force the Orchard sends to kill the Hamiltons and the crew of the Transutopian.
  24. Caravaggio records everything that happens aboard the Tulip.  The ship’s AI (as Luc refers to Caravaggio) also deletes records upon request.
  25. Stephen Hamilton is off to a holding cell at the end of the episode.
  26. The Orchard is not done with the crew of the Transutopian.  For proof of that statement, watch the next three episodes.
  27. Percy says farewell to Ayla and Cordula before going off to dismantle PIDS.  She has an idea for a better defense system, she says.  Dante is less than enthusiastic.
  28. Perhaps Ayla and Cordula will be safe from the Orchard.  Maybe they will fare better without their father getting into trouble and hauling them around.
  29. The Orchard has not contacted Luc since the death of Darius.  Yet Luc contacted the orchard in Super Max.
  30. Luc still has some allies in the Orchard.  Watch the next three episodes.
  31. How many shuttles does the Tulip carry?  It has one functional shuttle, seen throughout the first season.  Yet an observant viewer may recall shuttles others have left on board, including in this episode.  Yes, Dante paid his back debts to Rudolpho with the special forces shuttle at the end of Siren’s Song.  But what about the other shuttles?  (Yes, I pay close attention to details.)

Next:  Bad Seed, with more about the Orchard, the seeds, and Travis, as the first season winds down and cranks up the action and excitement.
