GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Navarre

A Screen Capture

  1. In Rudolpho’s opening transmission (omitted in the Redux version), he says that women have no power to change him.  Rudolpho also states that secrets cause damage and that parents screw up their children.
  2. This episode plays out over four days, according to the passage of time, indicated in dialogue.
  3. In the Jovian system….
  4. Navarre, a senior official of the Orchard, finds himself marginalized by the faction to which Tosca belongs.  He also finds himself at a crossroads, with no escape.
  5. Dante dreams that he, roaming the Transutopian, wakes himself up.
  6. Orchard agents, commanded by Tosca, board the Tulip and abduct Dante.  One agent reprograms Caravaggio.  The altered AI is blue, not yellow.  The blue Caravaggio floods the quarters of Luc and Percy with a narcotic nerve agent, rendering them unconscious.
  7. Three days later (although one would not know that, except via dialogue), on space station Epsilon 147, departs for the Transutopian in a shuttle.  Meanwhile, Tosca interrogates Dante on Epsilon 147.
  8. Tosca and her agents have injectors (or an injector) identical to the one Eccleston had in The Divinity Cluster and that Darius presumed was lost in Dark and Stormy Night.
  9. Tosca, seeking to locate Travis, injects Dante with a serum, a variation of the Divinity Cluster, in hope of establishing a psychic link between Dante and Travis.  Eccleston developed the serum.  Dante, in an induced trance state, sees Penny instead.
  10. Navarre’s access code is “Cassandra’s warning heeded.”  How ironic!
  11. Yellow Caravaggio and Blue Caravaggio argue.  Blue Caravaggio wins, for a while.
  12. Navarre, approaching the Transutopian, orders Yellow Caravaggio to replace the atmosphere in the quarters of Luc and Percy, who wake up.  Blue Caravaggio initiates the ship’s self-destruct sequence and insults Percy.
  13. I enjoy the way Percy says, “I’m a vindictive little person.”
  14. Percy forces her quarters’ doors open. Then she meets Navarre and Luc, en route to a shuttle.  Percy remains on board to reprogram Caravaggio and halt the self-destruct sequence.
  15. Navarre and Luc go to Epsilon 147 to rescue Dante, which they do.
  16. Dante, under the influence of the serum, remembers seeing Penny inject herself (via a device that resembles the one Eccleston had) with what she claimed was a “vitamin booster.”
  17. Darius harbored suspicions about Navarre until shortly before Darius died.
  18. Tosca cancelled the Orchard investigation into Darius’s death.
  19. Percy finds the container of atmospheric seeds in the kaleidoscope from Goodbye, So Long.
  20. A Raider shuttle with Salomea on board approaches the Transutopian.  She is on a mission from Travis, to find Dante’s VR device, which Penny invented.
  21. Travis remembers Percy and knows that Dante has been searching for him.
  22. Travis should be about fourteen years old.
  23. Navarre injects Dante with an antidote.  Then Luc takes Dante back to the Tulip.
  24. Percy finally succeeds in rebooting Caravaggio and saving the ship.
  25. Percy leaves the container of atmospheric seeds in Dante’s quarters then leaves with Salomea.
  26. Dante and Luc, aboard the Transutopian, follows the ion trail of the Raider shuttle with Salomea and Percy on board.
  27. The new special effects are very good.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Luc, Contemplating the Murder of Her Father

A Screen Capture

  1. This is a clip show.  As far as clip shows go, it is a well-done one.  Dark and Stormy Night is vastly superior to the clip show in the second season.
  2. This episode picks up where the previous installment, Half Dense Players, ends.
  3. The exposition dump in this episode links it and almost all of the previous episodes together.  Many clips come from The Divinity Cluster.  The Redux version of Dark and Stormy Night includes a brief clip from episode 1.22, Resurrection.
  4. The Redux version of this episode, unlike any other one thus far, opens with Rudolpho’s opening transmission.  He includes accepting money from the Orchard and shows Percy’s recorded demand that Dante get to fire Luc.  Dante may not fire Luc, Rudolpho says.
  5. Luc and Dante arrive at an understanding at the end of the episode.
  6. Darius is a control freak.
  7. Luc explains the Divinity Cluster to Dante.
  8. Darius boards the Transutopian and meets Dante.
  9. Luc no longer trusts her father.
  10. Pacquette’s faction of the Orchard seeks to control the Divinity Cluster, ostensibly for the benefit of the human race.  Darius and his faction seek to gain more information then make the news public, in a controlled way.  Darius and his faction seek to find Eccleston, presumably traveling between dimensions, before Pacquette’s faction does.  Darius wants Dante and Luc to find Eccleston before Pacquette does.
  11. The Divinity Cluster allows some people to travel through other dimensions.  Departing for another dimension looks like dying to the uninformed.
  12. The Divinity Cluster also allows some people to move back and forth in time, therefore, to be immortal.
  13. Penny Montana, Dante’s late wife, was an Orchard scientist working on what became known as the Divinity Cluster.  Eccleston built on her work.
  14. Unbeknownst to Darius, Luc has the injector Eccleston designed and used in the first episode.  Darius thinks the injector is lost.
  15. We have a repeat of the internal dating problem the move of the present from 2275-2276 in the original version of the first season to 2285-2286 in the Redux version of the first season.  In a clip from Frozen, Dante gives the date of his son’s abduction as November 3, 2264–just over a decade prior to the events of that episode.  Within the Redux chronology, that date must be November 3, 2274.
  16. Darius offers to help Dante find Travis in exchange for Dante helping Darius.
  17. The Orchard has a thorough dossier on the Raiders.  As we learn before the end of the first season, the Orchard and the Raiders are not strangers to each other.  (I would be careful about spoilers, but the first season, in its original form, aired in 2000-2001.  After more than eighteen years, the anti-spoiler clause has expired.)
  18. Darius and Luc depart on hostile terms.
  19. Luc is done working for the Orchard, but not playing along with them.  She shows Dante, still unsure about whether to believe Darius, Eccleston’s injector.
  20. Darius departs the Transutopian, after having left a tracing program.  Dante will lead the Orchard to Travis, Darius says.  Then the ship carrying Darius explodes.
  21. Luc declares her father death to be “cold-blooded murder.”
  22. Luc has been protecting Dante and Percy throughout the series.
  23. She no longer has divided loyalties.
  24. Dark and Stormy Night links episodes, ties up loose ends, and moves the story arcs forward.

Next:  Super Max, a lighter episode and a palate-cleanser.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  The Alien Presence

A Screen Capture

  1. The beginning of this episode casts doubt on what Charles told Martin Harman about the whereabouts of Darius in The Most Wanted Man, the previous episode, which leads directly into this one.  How could Darius have been chairing the Outer Worlds Peace Conference if he has been burning out his ship’s annihilation drive to travel from the Earth’s Moon to Jupiter space in five weeks?
  2. On Clarke Station (named after Arthur C. Clarke, of course), Darius sees a severely disfigured body off-screen.  The corpse is evidence of what he calls “a catastrophic intersection of multidimensional space and time.”  The corpse is that of Harvey, a friend of “the” Andrea Arquette, an artist and celebrity, whom Percy reveres and Rudolpho describes as the “bitch goddess of wankers everywhere.”
  3. Andrea is really sweet.
  4. Andrea, officially wanted for questioning in Harvey’s alleged murder, has been losing days.  According to Darius, she has manifested multidimensional sight via the Divinity Cluster.
  5. Dante has been broadcasting aged-up images of Travis again.
  6. Officially, Dante has orders to take Andrea Arquette to Ganymede for questioning.  Yet, as Andrea points out, authorities could have questioned her at Clarke Station.  In reality, Orchard agents masquerading as Ganymede correctional officers have orders to intercept the Transutopian at Ganymede and take Andrea Arquette.
  7. In Trust, Percy described the judicial system at Ganymede as being corrupt.
  8. Rudolpho forbids Dante to fire Luc.
  9. Dante explains to Percy that the Golden Rule is, “He who has the gold, makes the rules.”
  10. Percy is correct; Rudolpho is on the take.  We in the viewing audience know that the Orchard has been paying him.
  11. A three-million-year-old ship, the same one from The Divinity Cluster, was orbiting Clarke Station.  When the Transutopian departed for Ganymede, the ancient vessel, visible to the Tulip‘s scanners only in diagnostic mode, began to follow the Transutopian.  Percy confirmed the existence and age of the ancient ship with two probes.
  12. “She has a very interesting soul.”–Andrea Arquette on Percy
  13. Luc continues to leave the bridge without permission, even after Dante forbids that.
  14. Luc tells Darius about the ancient ship.  He makes the connection to the the archaeological site from The Most Wanted Man.
  15. Lights (or what appear to be lights) from the ancient ship invade the Transutopian and temporarily disable Caravaggio and send the Tulip falling toward Europa.  Percy saves the ship, of course.
  16. “Damn, I’m brilliant.”–Percy on herself
  17. The alien presence possesses Arquette, who tells Dante and Luc, “You will be as gods.”
  18. Darius is willing to let Dante and Percy die and save only Luc and Andrea.  Luc refuses to cooperate.  Darius, in an Orchard vessel, is even willing to fire on the Transutopian with Luc aboard.
  19. Luc, in her quarters, dictates a detailed report, which she places on a small storage device and gives to Dante.  She has set up a dead man’s switch, just in case Darius fires on the Tulip.  If he fires, Caravaggio will broadcast the report.
  20. Darius withdraws.
  21. Luc reveals that she has been working for the Orchard and has just saved the lives of Percy and Dante.
  22. Dante asks Luc to tell him the truth after having deceived him consistently for so long.
  23. The first season of Starhunter/Starhunter Redux improves as one gets deeper into it.  Connecting the dots and establishing how one episode relates to other episodes is very satisfying.

Next:  Dark and Stormy Night, an exercise in connecting the dots.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Image in the Public Domain

  1. This episode begins on a light tone, offers comic relief, than takes on a darker tone.
  2. This episode establishes a Chekhovian gun–the seeds the Raiders want.
  3. In Rudolpho’s opening transmission (omitted in the Redux version), he opines that friendship is more important than family, for people choose their friends.  He also reveals that his given name is Rudolph.  “Rudolpho” sounds more exotic.
  4. The Mimas station at Io is a weapons-free zone.  Weapons are forbidden and nothing is free.  It is also “the bizarrest of bazaars.”
  5. Mimas is a moon of Saturn.
  6. Ike and Marco are merchants whose stalls are next to each other.  The two men are also working together on a clandestine deal involving the Raiders and some genetically-enhanced seeds that can allegedly restore the atmosphere of a planet, such as the polluted Earth.
  7. Percy gets off the ship!
  8. Percy purchases an oxygen recycler (needed immediately) as well as a kaleidoscope and some whatchamacallits and thingamajigs.
  9. Ike used to be Dante’s best friend.  Fifteen years ago (2271, in the Redux chronology), however, Penny left Ike for Dante.  Ike’s life went downhill, and he became involved in unsavory enterprises.
  10. Ike still bears a grudge against Dante.
  11. Ike, on the run from Raiders, blows up his ship and fakes his death.  Marco, whom Ike has double-crossed, boards the Transutopian with Dante and Percy.  He disables Caravaggio, overpowers the crew one-by-one, and lets some Raiders onboard.  The Raiders and Marco torture Dante, who does not know what they think he knows–the location of the seeds.  Then Marco kills the Raiders.   Dante sends Marco to the brig.
  12. This episode contains references to Cell Game and The Man Who Sold the World.
  13. Marco sets the Transutopian on course to Dion, another moon of Jupiter.
  14. The contact Ike and Marco have on Dion is John Kouyomdjian, a bartender.  Luc uses her Orchard contacts to find Kouyomdjian’s location very quickly when Dante, seeking to use the seeds to find Travis, becomes discouraged.  Percy becomes suspicious of Luc.  Dante meets Kouyomdjian in the bar.  Ike joins them.  Luc brings Marco to the bar.  People argue and kill each other.  Only Dante and Luc survive.
  15. Back on the Transutopian, Dante is discouraged again.  This was his best opportunity yet to find his son.
  16. The seeds are in the kaleidoscope.
  17. One of the funny stories Dante and Ike exchange entails a misadventure from years prior.  Ike had stolen Mrs. Kouyomdjian’s beloved shih tzu, to use for breeding.  Ike did not know that the dog was gay.
  18. Aram Kouyomdjian was a boom operator during the first season.

Next:  The Most Wanted Man, in which we return to the Orchard.

BEHIND THE CAMERAS

Composer = Donald Quan

Length of the original episode = 0:47:23

Length of the Redux episode = 0:44:06

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Electra

A Screen Capture

  1. The Redux version of this episode features some new music.
  2. Luc opposes gambling.
  3. The comic relief in this otherwise serious episode comes during the poker game for kitchen duty.
  4. In Rudolpho’s opening transmission (omitted in the Redux version), he mentions that neither he nor his current lover want to have children.
  5. I have been pondering the Raiders.  They have existed for at least half a century.  Their origins were with soldiers who could not father children, due to the effects of experiments.  So the Raiders started abducting–liberating and adopting, as they say–children.  Are “liberated” and “adopted” Raiders also sterile?  Or has the abduction of children just become a tradition with them?
  6. Electra, whom Rudolpho calls a “Raider babe gun runner,” is 25 years old.  She has been a raider for 18 years.  She remembers her previous family, with its broken home life.
  7. In the 2230s (in the Redux chronology), the Transutopian served as a troop carrier and bore the name Nighthawk during a war against Raiders on Mars.  Colonel E. W. Bramwell, of the 104th Space Cavalry, commanded the vessel in Operation Black Light.  History recorded the first assault on Raiders’ bases on Mars as a failure.  Indeed, the Raiders won that battle but lost the war.  His only child, Joe, died in that assault.  Bramwell claimed he lost the engagement because some of his men betrayed him.
  8. Bramwell planned another assault on Raider bases, but disappeared.  He was officially Missing in Action and presumed he dead.  He received the Silver Signal Medal, Second Class, posthumously.
  9. Bramwell and Majors Taylor and Fuji remained in cryonic freeze on Level 48 of the Transutopian for about 50 years, until a short circuit and a power surge caused a computer to revive Bramwell.  Taylor and Fugi had died already.
  10. Bramwell, intent on completing his mission, initially does not believe how much time has passed, even after meeting Luc, Dante, and Electra.  Meeting Percy convinces him, though.
  11. Dante tells Bramwell that the current year is 2276.  That year is consistent with the original chronology of Starhunter, in which The Divinity Cluster opens in 2275.  The Divinity Cluster (Redux), however, the current year is 2285.  So the current year in this episode in 2286.
  12. The Transutopian is en route to Ganymede, to drop off Electra, until Dante realizes that he has stumbled upon the location of the Raider gathering, held every four years.  He hopes to retrieve Travis, but Electra tells the captain to be careful what he wishes for–good advice.
  13. Attendance at the gathering is mandatory for Raiders.
  14. Raiders seem to be relegated to the outer worlds, except when the venture into the inner worlds, as in Family Values.
  15. Bramwell has become a hero to the Raiders, who use his assault on their bases on Mars half a century prior as a model for training new Raiders.
  16. Dante offers to let Electra go if she will help him find Travis.  She gets the Transutopian through security at the gathering, and Dante makes plans to accompany Bramwell to the gathering.  Bramwell, however, has other plans.  He flies a small craft literally crashes the gathering.  His last words are “Mission accomplished!”
  17. The Transutopian gets the hell out of Dodge.
  18. Electra is still headed for Ganymede.
  19. Percy is the most important person in Dante’s life.
  20. Dante, prior to what he thinks will be a dangerous mission to retrieve Travis, visits virtual reality Penny.
  21. Bramwell comes across as a pathetic character and a man intent on fulfilling his mission.  Some of his men betrayed him in the 2230s, he spent decades sleeping in a cryonic chamber while authorities presumed him dead, his family died in the interim, and he had no place in the 2280s.  In the end, all he had to live and die for was his mission, which had ended five decades prior.  Shortly after a freak power surge woke Bramwell up, he started looking for a way to die.  He found it.
  22. Bramwell quotes Revelation 1:7-8, but he, not Jesus, is the Alpha and the Omega in his mind.
  23. Electra belongs to the Valkyrie clan.

Next:  Goodbye, So Long, which introduces another plot thread that will pay off at the end of the season.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Percy and Marina

A Screen Capture

  1. Rudolpho, in his opening transmission (omitted in the Redux version), reveals that he has no use for religion.  Rudolpho also calls Brother #13 “this piece of garbage.”
  2. Perhaps the name “Brother #13” is a reference to Brother XII (born Edward Wilson), founder of the Aquarian Foundation and leader of a cult in British Columbia in the 1920s and 1930s.
  3. Unfortunately, suicidal cults are not just elements of certain works of fiction.
  4. The Ark, with a capacity of about 500 people, is a pyramid-shaped spacecraft headed for the Sun, supposedly to take the members of the Church of Omega to Heaven, or union with their god, Vahooti.
  5. Brother #13 is rude and insulting whenever a follower expresses a lack of faith, or expresses a doubt, a common occurrence.  He has no tolerance for doubts.  Brother #13 is a cult leader, in the full meaning of “cult.”
  6. Brother #13 has the power to “rejuvenate faith” in a person by touching that person’s head with his hands, from which a blue glow emanates.
  7. Brother #13 “makes a great sacrifice” by escaping from the Ark with his unofficial wife (Marina, young enough to be his daughter) and his bodyguard (Jacob) at the last minute.  The cult leader explains that he has to “rejuvenate faith” in more people.
  8. Brother #13, once an army mechanic then a prisoner of war on Callisto during the civil war, claims to have emerged from his captivity with the gift of insight.
  9. In-universe, the historical Vahooti was a twentieth-century monk who wrote extensively about the Bible.
  10. Brother #13 temporarily converts Luc.
  11. Absence from Brother #13 weakens his control over one.
  12. Percy is a good shot.
  13. Dante turns Brother #13, Marina, and Jacob over to the authorities at Mercury.
  14. Luc sends a message to Darius.  She speculates that Brother #13 had come into contact with Dr. Novak and warns Darius that the cult leader is dangerous.
  15. On board the authority shuttle, a guard kneels before Brother #13.
  16. The new special effects are beautiful.

GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE EPISODE

Above:  Percy

A Screen Capture

  1. In Rudolpho’s opening transmission (omitted in the Redux version), he reveals that he has never married, that he did meet the woman he should have married, and that, years later, he saw her again, from a distance.
  2. The Biodesign corporation is a front for the Orchard.  Biodesign uses its janitorial staff as guinea pigs for a foreign antibody that attacks the brain stem and causes death within two days.  The corporation has hired more than 4000 janitors.
  3. One may reasonably wonder how many of these janitors actually cleaned anything.
  4. Dr. Gardiner does not care about, as far as she knows, having caused the deaths of many test subjects.  She is, however, interested in that happens during the 48 hours following injection.
  5. The new special effects (in the Redux version) for Saturn Outpost 359 resemble those for Ring Shepherd from Becoming Shiva (season 2).
  6. Eric, Luc’s former husband, is the newest janitor at Biodesign.  He has that job for less than a day before Dr. Gardiner injects him.
  7. Eric is a compulsive gambler.  This caused his dishonorable discharge from the military years ago.
  8. Eric was deep in gambling debt until Biodesign bought his debt and injected him.
  9. Dr. Gardiner explains that she is trying to further human evolution.
  10. The warrant for Eric’s arrest indicates two counts of first-degree murder.  He insists he was just defending himself.
  11. After Dr. Gardiner injects Eric, he grabs a gun, shoots his way out, and steals the Carpathia, a shuttle.  The Transutopian apprehends him while he is en route to the Hyperion Medical Outpost, the closest medical site, in search of the antidote Dr. Gardiner claimed did not exist.
  12. Caravaggio develops an antidote, which the foreign antibody overpowers quickly.
  13. Luc is not impulsive.
  14. Luc projects the image of a hard, by-the-book, no-nonsense person, but she has a soft side.
  15. Luc’s marriage becomes a topic of conversation, especially with Percy.
  16. Luc divorced Eric more than five years ago.  She did not cease to love him, though.
  17. Luc left the military a year and a half ago, after her mother died.  Luc wanted to be close to Darius, her father, at that time, but he was distant and busy dealing with the Divinity Cluster.
  18. Luc saw an illusion of her mother in Frozen.
  19. After Dante finds a spare part aboard the Carpathia, Percy restores the Transutopian‘s reactor to full power, but not in time to reach the Hyperion Medical Outpost.
  20. Dante visits virtual reality Penny.
  21. Penny, a scientist, had developed a way to record the essence of one’s soul.  He used that technique on her when she was dying, after the attack on Titan about a decade prior to this episode.  See Family Values.
  22. In a scene present in the original episode yet deleted from the Redux version, members of the Orchard called Rudolpho and expressed their displeasure with him, for Eric was still not in their hands.
  23. The Redux version of the episode includes the follow-up scene, in which Rudolpho calls Dante, who informs him of how ill Eric is. Rudolpho says that, unless Dante delivers Eric, nobody will receive any bounty.
  24. Pacquette (seen in The Divinity Cluster), a member of the Orchard, serves on the Board of Directors of Biodesign.
  25. Eric, with the help of Dante and Luc, takes the Carpathia into outer space.  The shuttle explodes.
  26. Is Eric dead?  Or did he move to a different dimension, as Eccleston did in The Divinity Cluster?
  27. Luc properly blames the Orchard for Eric’s death.
  28. The new special effects in the Redux version are beautiful.  The story, not remastered, still holds up well.  Special effects can be nice, but a good story matters more.
  29. Luc mourns Eric:  “People come into your life and make you happy, they cause you grief, and then they’re gone. All that’ s left are ripples where they once were–ripples, stretching out forever.”  This statement hit me hard this time, due to a recent death.
  30. Percy has mostly cut her self off from other people emotionally.
  31. Dante’s attitude toward Eric changes during the episode.  The captain initially has the “tell it to the judge” attitude.  At the end, he lets Eric go.

Next:  Order, with a cult leader, the Divinity Cluster, and a reference to The Man Who Sold the World.
